Rated “T” for “Teen”

When 10th grader Yugi Mutou solved the ancient Egyptian Millennium Puzzle, the spirit of Yu-Gi-Oh, the Kings of Games, entered his body.  Together they fight in “Duel Monsters,” the most popular collectible card game in the world.  Yugi defeated Maximillion Pegasus, the super-rich designer of Duel Monsters, a loss which led to a horrible fate for Pegasus.  Now, in Yu-Gi-Oh! R, the sequel to Yu-Gi-Oh!: Duelist and the prequel to Yu-Gi-Oh!: Millennium World!, Pegasus’ protégé, Yako Tenma, plots revenge against Yugi, and has also kidnapped Yugi’s friend, Anzu Mazaki, as part of his diabolical plan.

As Yu-Gi-Oh! R, Vol. 2 (entitled A World Ruled by Fear!) opens, Yugi’s battle against Yako Tenma continues, but the battle ends with a stunning twist.  Tenma also reveals his terrible plan for Yugi’s friend, Anzu Mazaki – the true object of Project R.A.  Meanwhile, Seto Kaiba, the Lord of Cards, races to the KaibaCorp building to relieve Tenma of his control of the building and the corporation.  At least, that’s the plan…

THE LOWDOWN:  I am not a Yu-Gi-Oh! fan, but I like the kind of weird and ingenious monsters that populate manga and collectible cards.  Yu-Gi-Oh! R is a manga about card games, so each volume of the series is a cornucopia of the best of both worlds’ penchant for fantastic creatures and characters.

Yu-Gi-Oh! R is produced by Akira Ito, a longtime assistant of Yu-Gi-Oh! creator Kazuki Takahashi, so this series looks the way it is supposed to look – like it belongs in the Yu-Gi-Oh-verse.  This is a good read and is often entertaining; the art, in terms of composition and page design, is even better.  Yu-Gi-Oh! followers will be pleased, and even a non-fan like myself is enjoying this.

POSSIBLE AUDIENCE:  Anyone who has been reading the other Yu-Gi-Oh! manga series will want Yu-Gi-Oh! R.

B+
