Sota Toys has released its second set of Now Playing seven inch action figures. This set includes the Creeper, from the movie The Creepers Jeepers 2, Killer Klown, from Killer Klowns From Outer Space and IMHOTEP from The Mummy Returns. According to Sota “these just might be the best movie-based action figures ever made.” As Sota was a special effects animation studio, it is normal that it would market action figures based on the type of films it used to work on in the past.
However, these figures are often from very badly criticized films that appeal principally to film buffs and fans of cult hits. Few of these films are known outside the circle of their genres and are released without much fanfare from large studios. By pointing out to fans the quality of the sculpts, Sota is attempting to broaden its customer base outside the cult film crowd. The question remains to be seen whether more mainstream film fans and action figure collectors will find these figures as pleasing as their hardcore fans.
