DC COMICS
WRITER: George Romero
ARTISTS: Tommy Castillo, Rodney Ramos
COVER: Berni Wrightson
Zombies are the new 'vampires' as far as the entertainment workd is concerned. Virtually everyone seems to have jumped on the bandwagon and brought out a zombie-oriented comic book, movie or video game. At least DC can say it went straight to the source with George Romero who first launched the fad years ago with his "Dawn of the Dead" movies. This new comic series is suppose to feature various horror tales but it starts off with a six-part story of a girl, a scientist and his assistant, trying to find a cure for the plague of zombies. Romero assumes that everyone is familiar with the conventions of the genre and throws us straight into the action with the heroine wielding a shotgun to fight off zombies. But just when you think he is recycling the same material, a heroic elephant comes to the rescue and it becomes apparent that Romero is finally getting the chance to tell the story he never had the budget to do on the big screen. He also seems to be bringing in some new tricks to his zombie story to make it stand out from the others on the stands. Unlike the writers from other media who have tried doing comics, Romero shows a quick grasp of comic book story-telling techniques such as pacing, dialogue and action so the story actually reads like it was done by an experienced pro. The story is expectedly gory but after all the zombie movies and comics that have come out recently, it is just standard fare by now. Romero does tell an an exciting tale but that said, it doesn't exactly look like a ground-breaking classic that his movies are suppose to be. It will be interesting to see if the guy who started the zombie craze can now overhaul it for a new, jaded audience.
