The Promised Neverland Graphic Novel Volume 11 cover image
Rated “T+” for “Older Teen”
Life is wonderful for the children at the orphanage, Grace Field House, or so it seems... The orphanage's three brightest children are Emma, Norman, and Ray, all 11-years-old. Like the other orphans, they enjoy the daily studying and exams, and also the delicious food and plentiful playtime. However, the children's loving, but stern caretaker, “Mom,” hides the fact that everything is not what it seems, a fact these three bright children will discover.
As The Promised Neverland, Vol. 11 (entitled The End; Chapters 89 to 97) opens, Emma and her new allies at “Goldy Pond” (the place Emma knew as “A08-63”) have taken down many of the demons that were using Goldy Pond as a secret hunting preserve. The last one standing is Grand Duke Leuvis, who seems impossible to destroy. Some unexpected help may turn the battle, but will Emma be able to bear the cost of this all-or-nothing battle.
[This volume includes a bonus comics, a fan poll, and “A Special Extra Chapter 4.”]
THE LOWDOWN: The Promised Neverland manga remains a riveting read, from beginning to end. It reminds me of classic dystopian, young adult fiction, and of dark fantasy.
The Promised Neverland Graphic Novel Volume 11 is another top entry in this winning series. Like the previous four volumes, Vol. 11 raises the stakes for the young heroes. Writer Kaiu Shirai and artist Posuka Demizu have made shocking revelations in these recent volumes, and while some of them may have been devastating to readers, the young heroes of this story take it all in stride.
The role of adult humans in this series is coming to light, and hopefully these older characters will be the wonderful engaging characters that Shirai and Demizu have made of the children. There is a reason that The Promised Neverland anime is a popular series. Its source material, The Promised Land graphic novel series, is a summer potboiler.
I READS YOU RECOMMENDS: Readers of dark fantasy graphic novels will find a terrifying story in Shonen Jump's The Promised Neverland.
