The New Avengers Illuminati #1 of 5
Marvel Comics
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis, Brian Reed
Penciller: Jim Cheung
Inker: Mark Morales

This mini-series, a spin off from a one shot and the pages of the New Avengers’ series, looks at the secret activities of the cabal of Earth heroes who called themselves the Illuminati and who acted as the checks and balances of the Marvel universe prior the super hero civil war in America.  In this issue, the Illuminati serves a warning to the Skrull empire about never approaching Earth again, or else. Will the Skrull listen?

This is a good beginning for the series. Gone are Bendis’ padded stories as he must focus on a single event within a single issue. If he could write this way all the time, it would be very satisfying. A few things did bug be such as how the Skrull kept Doctor Strange in captivity. Something pleasing would have been for more group dynamics and direct references to the characters’ lives in continuity.

Cheung is a good artist who gets the job done. Part of his work reminds me of Tom Raney and Steve McNiven. The storytelling is good and so is the inking. Here the artists collaborate smoothly with the writers. So although the page layout is composed of wide panels, their purpose is to better tell the story as opposed to exposing the artists’ work. I wish all my comic books were this well created.

8/10
