In the new comic book, Syphilitic Cowboys, writer John Ira Thomas and artist Will Beard present a horror Western that will make your skin crawl and maybe even make you vomit.  It could be just the horror comic book a sick mind craves.

In this alternate-Earth Old West, a strain of STD turns men into three-toed mutants.  Always on the lookout for workers it can oppress, a railroad construction company turns these pitiful man-monsters into cheap labor, before deciding to dispatch them when there’s no need for the labor.  This culminates in a showdown in a small Colorado town, and perhaps, there will be some retribution.

Syphilitic Cowboys, although packaged as a large format (8” x 11”) comic book, is a short story brought to life like as a panoramic, big screen Western.  Will Beard’s art turns this vignette into something like a sore-covered Budd Boetticher film.  Still, I would have loved to see this in traditional black and white comic book art.

Thomas’ concept could be a deranged family member hiding in the crypt of Tales from the Crypt.  Readers who love to get that skin-crawling feeling from a horror story will dig this.
