Sin City is the film adaptation of three of Frank Miller’s Sin City comic book series (called graphic novels by serious critics). The film translates Miller’s idiosyncratic crime noir black ink style into reality, preserving much of Miller’s story and artwork. The last film that kept so much from the old comic book style is Dick Tracy. Director Robert Rodriguez shares directing credits with original creator Frank Miller.

Several stories are woven into one feature length film. Just like in the comic book, all stories are mixed and tied to one another. Whereas the comic book was created over several years, the film should have taken advantages of all three stories and deliver all stories through time. The gimmick of having three stories is not so new and integrated better in films like Pulp Fiction.

Visually, this was a strong movie with cool rain effects. Remarkably, once of Frank Miller’s strength, comic book visual storytelling was not as important in this film as film uses its own language. Nevertheless, much was borrowed from the original work. Already, Sin City’s style is influencing commercials and visual arts. In a sense it brings new energy to the table. But that’s to be expected, with a Frank Miller project.
