I love Chris Marker’s
La Jetée. And so does Matthew Saliba. He also, apparently, likes killing people, and the two passions have met in
She Was Asking For
It, a beautiful-looking inversion of the rape-and-revenge exploitation film comprised entirely of still photos. Writer/director/co-producer/actor Matthew Saliba dons many hats in this production, and all of them are probably made of human skin and the inside part of the brainpan, because this movie is pretty sick. Saliba stars as a young man kidnapped from a smoky nightclub by two women, who dress him up like Rob Halford after midnight and have their way with him using several sex toys. Saliba’s character is none too pleased about this, and exacts his revenge quite messily.
She Was Asking For It is hard to watch, and even harder to explain to your girlfriend when she finds the DVD sitting beside the
Star Trek boxed set, but for those with intestinal fortitude, it’s certainly worth a look, as are Saliba’s other, even stranger films,
Pandora’s Paradox and
The Manipulator And the Subservient.
