Runners is the story of an intergalactic team of couriers who ran into problems because of the unknown value of the cargo they transport to a crime boss. Space cops and pirates are after them and their special cargo. Part of the coveted cargo wishes to stay with the runners, earning them even more problems as they try to stir away from trouble and ditch the cargo. Runners reprints the first five issue series begun by Wang.

Runners is a great book that will appeal to fans of Wake. There’s enough action and backstory to make this first volume a great introduction to a new epic. The one thing that I really liked about this book, is how the human guy, is not the leader and all knowing and perfect hero of the book. He’s just another joe trying to survive. I like the stoic humour Cember, one of the runner’s alien guy.

Wang gives each character, especially the aliens, visual looks that fit their personality. His multiple wide eyes and constant smiles characterize Cember’s innocence and simplicity. Wang’s inking is strong and instead of giving his work a gritty feel, he draws clean pages with great contrasts that make this black and white comic book easy to read and comprehend. It also helps that his storytelling is good.
