Rated “M” for “Mature”

Record of Grancrest War is set in a world where the noble elite are supposed to fend off the threat of the terrifying and mysterious force known as “Chaos.”  Instead, these nobles engage in pointless, petty squabbles.  A young mage named Siluca Meletes dreams of bringing justice to the land.  She joins Theo, a knight errant with potential, to change the world order via the magical power of “crests.”

As Record of Grancrest War, Vol. 5 (Chapters 26 to 33) opens, the attack on Theo and Siluca's kingdom of Sievis has not been defeated by the forces of Waldlind.  That is because Waldlind has been turned back by Lord Villar Constance, the Earl of the Kingdom Altirk.  Disaster has struck the plans of Theo and Siluca, and Theo returns Sievis to its original ruler, Lord David Lassic.

Now, Siluca is once again a mage in service of Lord Villar, and Theo is a knight in his service.  Their first mission for their new lord takes Siluca and Theo deep into Altirk to greet Zelma, Altirk Elder of the Witches; Clara, Queen of the Werewolves; and the King of the Vampires.

THE LOWDOWN:
The Record of Grancrest War manga is an adaptation of the Record of Grancrest War light novel series created by author Ryo Mizuno (who may be best known for the fantasy novel series, Record of Lodoss War).  Writer-artist Makoto Yotsuba's adaptation of Record of Grancrest War can delve into courtly intrigue in ornate graphical storytelling or depict total war in explosive and emotive graphical storytelling.

Record of Grancrest War Graphic Novel Volume 5 sees the close of what is essentially the prologue chapters of this narrative.  The grand plans of Siluca and Theo have come to an end, or, rather, they must be put on hold for now.  Now, the story will delve deeper into the back story of this series, and I find Vol. 5 to be the most intriguing volume of the series since Vol. 2.

The English adaptation by Stan! finds the excitement in the dialogue heavy chapters with James Gaubatz's clean lettering finding a place for all that text.  Like Vol. 4, Vol. 5 has an intriguing ending that will make us come back for more, dear readers.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Record of Lodoss War may want to join the battle in Record of Grancrest War.
