These rankings are compiled from the top 3 vote-getters of 18 different voters on the Internet for comics released on July 28, 2004.
1. Astonishing X-Men #3, 23 pts
"I didn't really like issue #1, I thought issue #2 was good. But man, issue #3 was awesome. The characters were spot on and sounded great, there was a very kickass throwdown between Hank and Logan, and Scott questioning whether Emma is mind controlling him were all awesome. Yeah, the fact that the alien and the scientist are in cahoots is a little too typical and convienient, but it was still one of the best issues I've read of an X-Men title since the Morrison run." revolver86, DC Message Boards
2. DC: The New Frontier #5, 18 pts
Good stuff, but it feels a little too "silver age" for my tastes. After such a long time was spent introducing everyone, it seems that the action is a bit rushed. Still, the characterization is very enjoyable for the most part (but the Chals are still a waste).
3. The Avengers #500, 13 pts
Bendis is very good at atmosphere, and this time there is some action! Great characterization, including when the mind control stuff starts happening. It is still a bit early to tell if this arc will work, but it is enjoyable so far.
(tied for 4th) Sleeper: Season Two #2, 6 pts
"Why isn't this a TV show or major movie franchise? Because Holden Carver kicks the high holy hell out of any James Bond I've ever seen. And I'll take Veronica over any Moneypenny. And Dr. No would stain his pants around John Lynch or Tao." creepingterror, DC Message Boards
(tied for 4th) Batman #630, 6 pts
"'Hush' and 'Broken City', while both were very suprising stories, had their faults. 'Hush' lacked depth, and 'Broken City' felt... well, broken up in spots. But 'As The Crow Flies' has been the true shocker in the bunch, in that it has, for the most part, been a straightforward Batman tale that doesn't necessarily revolve around introspection and massive, sweeping change all around the Bat-board. It's the kind of story I'd give to B:TAS fans. Say it with me now: Winick haters suck! There, I've said it, and I feel better for having said it." creepingterror, DC Message Boards
6. Superman #207, 5 pts
"Maybe the best issue since the first of this arc. Kal picks a fight and waxes philisophical (and scientific) while getting closer to the truth, albeit slowly." darklaw14, DC Message Boards
7. Superman: Birthright #12, 4 pts
"Yu's art seemed to get worse every issue of this series. The art seemed dark and muddled, and the backgrounds were lacking. This series was disappointing overall, as nothing really seemed to happen. I'll stick with MoS." Jimmy King, DC Message Boards
(tied for 8th) Planetary #20, 3 pts
"Its rare that a comic like Planetary comes out and amazes me on why I love Warren Ellis. His take on comics is just awe-inspiring. Along with John Cassaday, who I now built an extra wing on to his shrine, can draw facial features and action in comics. As I look forward to issue 21, I can look back at each issue and still find something new." DubipR, DC Message Boards
(tied for 8th) Tarot: Witch of the Black Rose #27, 3 pts
"The phrase "Hands off my goblins!" sums this up nicely." darklaw14, DC Message Boards
(tied for 8th) The Walking Dead #9, 3 pts
"a quiet beginning, a surprising middle, and a shocking end. Beautiful. And one hell of a cliff-hanger." nicoderm, DC Message Boards
(tied for 8th) Powers #2, Demo #8, Catwoman #33, Batgirl #54, 3 pts
15. Amazing Spider-Man #510, Uncle Scrooge #332, JLA: Another Nail #3, Fantastic Four #516, Caper #10, The Legend of Chun Hyang, The Losers #14, The Legion #36, 2 pts
23. John Constantine: Hellblazer #198, Ultimate Fantastic Four #9, Evil Eye #12, Mystique #17, Powerless #2, 1 pt
