1. The Flash #217, 23 pts
A decent story with the Rogues, Linda, and Batman keeping it spiced up. A bit melodramatic, and I still don't like Boomerang Jr., but the last page revelation was very interesting. The Batman episode was excellent.
2. Captain America #2, 9 pts
"I'm lovin' Brubaker and Epting on this title. It really is a new take on the character, and one that feels really fresh. But I have to confess, Kurt Busiek's letter on the letter page really blew me away. That was worth the $$ in and of itself." ishmael1st, DC Message Boards
3. Deadshot #2, 8 pts
"Deadshot tries to make thing "right" by brutally murdering lots of people. Completely in character, and raises some interesting questions about what happens next. I have no idea how a confrontation with Green Arrow will end without either Ollie dead or Floyd in jail. That's what next issues are for I guess." rogue2, DC Message Boards
4. Justice League Elite #7, 7 pts
"Worlogog ... worlogog ... woo-hoo! Nice to see Kelly using some JLA continuity in this. Also liked the tension surrounding Mantiou's situation. I still think this remains one of the best books on the market. Good story, snappy dialogue, and tremendous art." ishmael1st, DC Message Boards
(tied for 5th) Phoenix: Endsong #1, 5 pts
A question of mystic identity here, as the two components of Phoenix are out of synchronization. This issue mainly sets up the main actors of the series. Wonderful art.
(tied for 5th) Detective Comics #802, 5 pts
"I'm starting to warm up to the story Lapham is trying to tell in 'City of Crime.' It's nice to see Batman speaking as a normal human being, not as the 'uber-Bat' a-hole personality some writers seem to saddle him with. Lapham's portrayal of Robin is very different from our usual picture of Tim. Tim is talking and acting like a normal 16 year old boy; obsessed with girls and glory. While this is probably a more realistic version of Tim than we normally see it's so different than his normal portrayal that it was very jarring to read. The backup story was pointless as usual. Since 'Josie Mac' has their been any good backup stories in 'Tec?" jimmyking, DC Message Boards
(tied for 5th) Firestorm #9, 5 pts
"A great issue of a great book. Jason is growing as a hero, learning from his mistakes and taking responsibility for his actions. Killer Frost is suitably evil. The last page was a real shocker -- not who made an appearance (knew it was going to happen by the end of the issue) but rather how. What does this mean for the new Firestorm? This is going to bug me for the next three weeks (but in a good way). Hopefully sales will go up on this book without removing Jason from the lead role, because I think the title is great just the way it is and the character deserves more time to grow." mistermiracle, DC Message Boards
8. The New Avengers #2, 4 pts
High quality work by Bendis, though it is a bit busy. The prison break is still in its initial stages, very like a Bendis story, but he has managed to keep it interesting with good characterization and action. He made me not retch when I saw Sentry, so that definitely deserves some credit.
(tied for 9th) Flaming Carrot Comics #1, 3 pts
Burden and Flaming Carrot are back, working their magic again with completely irrational but intense fun! Which was what I expected. And that's why I bought it. So I'm very happy! They aim a good solid kick towards the buttocks of political correctness and the media. Which was also what I expected. So I'm pleasantly not-surprised!
(tied for 9th) Kabuki #3, 3 pts
"One would think that endlessly introspective navel-watching would get old after awhile. When it is presented as thoughtfully and artfully as it is in Kabuki, somehow it doesn't. It is so pleasurable to read. I'm not sure it's even fair to compare this against merely mortal comics." hatutzeraze, DC Message Boards
