Rated “T” for Teen

Stirred by the stories of the pirate, “Red-Haired” Shanks, Monkey D. Luffy dreamed of being a pirate ever since he was a child.  Even after the enchanted “Devil Fruit” gave him the ability to stretch like rubber and took away his ability to swim, Luffy still set out to sea.  He enlisted a motley crew: Zolo the master swordsman; Nami the treasure-hunting thief; Usopp, the lying sharpshooter; Sanji the high-kicking chef; Chopper, the walkin’ talkin’ reindeer doctor; and crafty archeologist, Nico Robin.  Luffy and crew sail the oceans in the Merry Go, searching for the legendary treasure known as “One Piece.”

It’s a battle royale on Skypiea in One Piece, Vol. 28 (entitled Wyper the Berserker).  The legendary island in the sky is real, and part of it, called the Upper Yard, was once a part of the island of Jaya.  The crew of the Merry Go believes that the Upper Yard is the location of the legendary city of gold, El Dorado, but it is also the home of the fearsome ruler of Skypiea, Kami Eneru.

Eneru is facing the stiffest challenge to his rule in ages in the form of the Shandians, a guerilla movement.  Before he faces Eneru, however, Shandian leader, Wyper the Berserker, will have to take on Luffy!

THE LOWDOWN:  Volume 28 of One Piece will thrill lovers of shonen manga (comics for teen boys).  It’s filled with inventively designed weirdos and the usual suspects – Luffy and company.  Those shonen fans who like the fights and battles (like me) will feast on the crazy battles involving the crew of the Merry Go, the Shandians, Eneru’s Heavenly Warriors and their leader, Yama, and finally, Eneru himself.  All of these zany fights are drawn in a heavily detailed style that isn’t stiff, but is instead as elastic as the art of Tex Avery and Jack Cole.

POSSIBLE AUDIENCE:  Young readers who like pirates will probably like One Piece.

A-
