THE ADVENTURES OF NIKKI HARRIS THE CYBERMATION WITCH 2.0

CANDLE LIGHT PRESS/WARNING COMICS

CARTOONIST: Carter Allen

24 pp, Color, $3.00

Carter Allen (the Dub Trub series) unleashes his first color comic, The Adventures of Nikki Harris the Cybermation Witch 2.0.   Nikki Harris takes place in the same universe as Dub Trub.   In fact, the series gives the reader a good idea of the resolution of the Earth/Voyd war that is the centerpiece of Dub Trub.

In this future, future world, the line between magic and science is blurred, and it’s called Cybermation.   A select group of superhuman beings (superheroes?) are masters of the art of Cybermation, and one of them is the protagonist of this tale, Nikki Harris.   Carter seems to have formed her in the mold that made Agents Black and Red of Dub Trub, and then remixes her with Neo from The Matrix films and the classic American superhero, Superman.   In this first tale, Nikki takes on an old nemesis who uses an alien dreadnaught from the Earth/Voyd war to enact revenge of Nikki – classic comic book foodstuff.

Nikki Harris is pretty much the same kind of sci-fi soup one would get from Allen’s graphic novel series, Dub Trub – pulp sci-fi, space opera, superheroes, video games, and sci-fi action movies, but with a sassy girl hero.   Nikki Harris takes Allen’s comics to the next level because it’s a color comic book.   The total art package:   layouts, design, shape, form, texture, and color remind me of Howard Chaykin’s beloved 1980’s comic book series, American Flagg!, except the lead isn't a normal human, but a superhuman.

The Adventures of Nikki Harris the Cybermation Witch is a fun read, and I’m curious to see where this goes.   We can see what Nikki Harris can do, and next time, perhaps we can see who Nikki Harris is.   The curious readers may want to get a hold of ED #1, a 1997 comic in which Allen debuted an earlier version of Nikki Harris and this story.   It’s a hand drawn story (compared to Allen’s recent computer created comics), and Allen’s art is stylistically similar to that of Larry Welz (of the infamous adult comix, Cherry).
