First, let's tell you that SPX this month in Bethesda will see a flock of Attitude cartoonists converge onto our tables lead by the unshutupable Ted Rall. They'll be signing all the Attitude books about alternative cartoonists and Ted will also sign his latest 'Silk Road to Ruin". Ask him about 'Buzkashi', then flee in the other direction. Also: meet David Axe of 'War Fix'. Happening at the Small Press Expo October 13-15.

On to what's being solicited in comics stores as we speak:
This December, NBM premieres a quickly rising star in Europe, a mad genius, and this book, done in co-publishing with the Louvre, has already sold over 40,000 in France:

New from ComicsLit:

GLACIAL PERIOD

Nicolas De Crecy

For the first time in the US, ComicsLit brings over the latest enfant terrible of European comics, a mad genius, and for the first time, The Louvre museum is involved in a co-edition of a series of graphic novels. There will be four and each will be a vision of this great museum by a different artist. De Crecy, at the sight of the incredible richness of the museum’s collection was overwhelmed and felt small and ignorant. The result is a story set thousands of years hence in a glacial period where all human history has been forgotten and a small group of archeologists fall upon the Louvre, buried in age-old snow. They cannot begin to explain all the artifacts they see. What could they have meant? Their interpretations are nonsense, absurd, farcical.

6x9, 80pp., full color trade pb. with flaps: $14.95, ISBN 1-56163-483-2

THE TREASURY OF VICTORIAN MURDER:

Vol.8: THE CASE OF MADELEINE SMITH

Rick GEARY

NOW IN PAPERBACK! A scandalous secret affair in 19th century Scotland between an upper-class woman and a gentleman of lower standing ends in his murder by poison...

6x9, 80pp., B&W, trade pb., $8.95, ISBN 1-56163-468-9

Here's what the press had to say about the hardcover:

"I hope that story's narrative style--meticulously detailed, with a quiet voice, description used to enhance the images--would win you over to the idea that graphic art is a great storytelling medium. He tells a richly layered story in a new way. Wonderfully presented."
-Reviewingtheevidence.com
"Grotesque Victorian imagery prospers under Geary's pen: His characters come out looking as jagged and peculiar as their actions." -East Bay Express
"A must read!"
-Andrew "Capt. Comics" Smith, Scripps Howard papers
"Popular novels, plays, and movies, notably David Lean's film Madeleine, have been based on the case, but it's hard to imagine any of them presenting it more amusingly, thoroughly, and succinctly than does Geary's trademark droll counterpointing of narration and image." -Booklist
