The winners of the 17th annual Eisner Awards were announced Friday, July 15th in a ceremony at the San Diego Comic-Con. Dark Horse is pleased to announce that five of its publications were recipients of the prestigious award. The Eisner awards are the comics industry equivalent of the Academy Awards and derive their name from legendary comic writer and artist Will Eisner.

Dark Horse winners include:

Best Continuing Series
The Goon, by Eric Powell

Best Humor Publication:
The Goon, by Eric Powell

Best Anthology:
Michael Chabon Presents The Amazing Adventures of the Escapist, edited
by Diana Schutz and Dave Land

Best Short Story:
“Unfamiliar” from the Dark Horse Book of Witchcraft by Even Dorkin and
Jill Thompson

Best Writer/ Artist:
Paul Chadwick, Concrete: The Human Dilemma

Best Lettering:
Todd Klein, Creatures of the Night

Best Coloring:
Dave Stewart, Conan, B.P.R.D.

The Goon is a hilarious blend of pulpy horror and slapstick comedy that follows the ongoing misadventures of the man they call “The Goon” and his spastic sidekick Franky as they battle the legions of the undead.

Michael Chabon Presents The Amazing Adventures of the Escapist is an anthology series that features that dazzling Master of Elusion, foe of tyranny, and champion of liberation--the Escapist. Operating from a secret headquarters under the boards of the Empire Theater, the Escapist and his crack team of associates roam the globe performing amazing feats of magic and coming to the aid of all those who languish in the chains of oppression.

The Dark Horse Book of Witchcraft includes collections of bizarre tales by Eisner Award-winning artists Mike Mignola, Gary Gianni, Evan Dorkin, Jill Thompson, and Scott Morse. Filled with stellar comic offerings, as well as a classic witch tale by Clark Ashton Smith and illustrated by cover artist Gianni, The Dark Horse Book of Witchcraft conjures up weird tales of horror and magic the likes of which one seldom sees in the comics medium.

Concrete: The Human Dilemma is a mini-series that follows the story of speechwriter Ron Lithgow, whose mind was suddenly removed from his body and placed into that of an immense extraterrestrial, one with a rock-like shell for skin. As the accidental celebrity Concrete, he is courted by a high-profile CEO to lend his name to a controversial population control program. While Concrete mulls this generous proposition over with his companion Maureen, his longtime aide Larry Munro mulls over an entirely different sort of proposal.

Creatures of the Night features writing by the New York Times best-selling author Neil Gaiman and includes two magical and disturbing stories lushly adapted to comics. Both stories feature animals and people not being quite what they seem.

Conan the Barbarian is an ongoing series featuring the classic Robert E. Howard character in stories that both adapt Howard’s novels as well as all new tales and adventures.

B.P.R.D. (Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense) features characters from Mike Mignola’s Hellboy comic series who continue the battle to save the world from a wide variety of assorted monsters and ghouls.
