Tokyo Ghoul: re Graphic Novel Volume 13 cover image

Ghouls do look like humans and live among us, but Ghouls crave human flesh.  The Commission of Counter Ghouls (CCG) is the only organization in the world fighting and exterminating Ghouls and investigating Ghoul-related crimes.  Haise Sasaki was in charge of an unruly CCG squad, “Quinx Squad” (or “Qs Squad”), but among the secrets of his forgotten past is the truth that he is Ken Kaneki, a half-human and half-Ghoul.

As Tokyo Ghoul: re, Vol. 13 (Chapters 133 to 144) opens, the CCG has finally had enough of its new leader, Kichimura Washu's mad power grab.  So, investigator Kiki Urie and veteran investigator, Yoriko Kuroiwa, lead the charge, only to discover that Washu a.k.a. Nimura Furuta is a Ghoul.  Angered at this move against him, Furuta leads his new Qs Sqaud, “the Oggai” and S3 Suzuya Squad in an attack against the Ghoul's “Goat” stronghold.  And Kaneki is forced to make a terrible choice.

THE LOWDOWN:  The Tokyo Ghoul: re manga is the follow-up to the Tokyo Ghoul manga.  I felt somewhat compelled to read the latest volume of the sequel.

Tokyo Ghoul: re Graphic Novel Volume 13 depicts the expected outcome of the CCG discovering the truth about its new leader.  Creator Sui Ishida continues to kick his narrative into high gear as this iteration of Tokyo Ghoul approaches its end.  The translation by Joe Yamazaki captures the intensity, while Vanessa Satone delightfully sprinkles word balloons and lettering across the gore and the really, really extreme violence.

Longtime readers will feel that something unseemly is coming – a big gross ending that will pull the meat curtain back from the true masters of the world Tokyo Ghoul.  So, of course, I felt compelled to read Vol. 13 of Tokyo Ghoul: re.  The ultra-violence is getting bigger and bigger with each severed limb and brutally-slaughtered character.
