Tokyo Ghoul: re Graphic Novel Volume 6 cover image

Ghouls look like humans, and they live among us.  Ghouls crave human flesh.  The Commission of Counter Ghouls (CCG) is the only organization in the world fighting and exterminating Ghouls and investigating Ghoul-related crimes.  Haise Sasaki is in charge on an unruly CCG squad, “Quinx Squad” (or “Qs Squad”), but his forgotten past hides dark secrets.

As Tokyo Ghoul: re, Vol. 6 (Chapters 53 to 63) opens, the CCG's operation to exterminate the ghouls of the Rosewald Family Faction is concluding.  However, the casualties are piling up, and among the wounded is Sasaki.  His critical injuries make him vulnerable, and his suppressed past threatens to overwhelm him.  In the aftermath of the Rosewald operation, Sasaki is promoted, and he begins his search for Sen Takatsukino, a popular and bestselling novelist with a dark secret.

THE LOWDOWN:  I have been having a hard time warming up to The Tokyo Ghoul: re manga.  Although it stands on its own, it is the sequel to the previous series, Tokyo Ghoul, which I really enjoyed reading.  Both series are the creations of Sui Ishida, and while I found some graphic novels in the sequel to be really good, I was still reticent...

Tokyo Ghoul: re Graphic Novel Volume 6 is fantastic.  It is the first volume to truly balance the mission of the CCG equally with the struggle of the Ghouls to exist.  Also, this volume seems to move Haise Sasaki closer to the peak of his Ghoul personality as Ken Kaneki.  I thought Vol. 5 was a turning point volume, one that rewards long-time readers.  Vol. 6 is Tokyo Ghoul: re in which the new series really starts to hit its stride as a narrative.
