Tokyo Ghoul: re Graphic Novel Volume 4 cover image

They live among us – these Ghouls that look like humans, but Ghouls crave human flesh.  The Commission of Counter Ghouls (CCG) is the only organization in the world fighting and exterminating Ghouls and investigating Ghoul-related crimes.  Haise Sasaki is in charge on an unruly CCG squad, “Quinx Squad” (or “Qs Squad”), but his forgotten past hides dark secrets.

Tokyo Ghoul: re, Vol. 4 (Chapters 31 to 41) opens a month after “Operation Auction Sweep.”  It is Christmas time, and Haise Sasaki is throwing a party for his friends in “Mado Squad.”  Soon, it is back to work, and a new Ghoul faction arises, one the CCG names “Rosé.”  The CCG targets the Ghouls in this new faction, but do not realize that some of the Ghouls have discovered Sasaki's secret.  One powerful Ghoul, Shu Tsukiyama, is determined to make Sasaki remember his past.

THE LOWDOWN:  The Tokyo Ghoul: re manga is the sequel to the previous series, Tokyo Ghoul.  Both series are the creations of Sui Ishida, who gives each series its own tone, unique from the other series.

My reading of Tokyo Ghoul: re Graphic Novel Volume 4 is that this series keeps moving away from the earlier series.  I know that might sound strange, especially as Haise Sasaki's past becomes a bigger part of the narrative.  However, Tokyo Ghoul: re is about relationships within groups, more so than it is about world-building, which was the focus of the original series.  And Ishida is offering a number of intriguing... crave-able characters.
