It has a cast of thousands and spans whole galaxies but this mini-series of a galactic war is becoming more coherent while remaining exciting and surprising. War has broken out between Adam Strange's adopted planet of Rann and Hawkwoman's home planet of Thanagar and various alien races are trying to take advantage of the hostilities as various space-based DC characters try to get to the bottom of the conflict. Newcomers may be a bit confused by who all these characters are-- the blue guy with the staff, the red guy with Kyle Rayner, etc. But old-timers will enjoy seeing these old faces again. They will particularly enjoy seeing them behave like heroes, not treated like cannon fodder or comedy relief. Although the morality of the war may be questionable, the valour of the protagonists is never questioned. With such a huge cast, this story could use a recap page every issue to update the readers on who is who and what their affiliations are but at least the reader is never confused about what is going on in each page. The art looks especially good, particularly the faces and human figures. Occasionally, it gets a little "artsy" with all the swooping spaceships and flying beings but on the whole, it is one of the best-looking DC books on the stands.
