Rated “T” for “Teen”

Ageha Yoshina is a high school student.  He was looking for his friend, Sakurako Amamiya, who had disappeared, when he found a mysterious phone card emblazoned with the “Psyren” logo.  The card transports him to Psyren, a warped alternate dimension that might actually be a near-future, post-apocalyptic Japan.  Now a Psyren drifter, Ageha can be called back to this future wasteland at a moment’s notice.  Once in Psyren, Ageha and the other Psyren drifters have to fight their way back to their world or die trying.

As Psyren, Vol. 7 (entitled December 2ND Revolution) opens, Ageha and his friends, including Elmore Tenjuin, are interrogating Saburo Inui.  That is when they meet Miroku Amagi, the leader of W.I.S.E., the psionist organization that will destroy the world.

Later, Ageha and fellow Psionists re-watch the videotape they brought back from the future (a trip to Psyren), and discover something new and shocking.  It’s time for December 2, 2009 – The Global Rebirth.  Then, it’s a return to Psyren.  There, Star Commander Dolkey has a score to settle with Ageha.

THE LOWDOWN:  After missing Volume 6 of the Psyren manga, I thought that I might be lost, coming in cold on Volume 7.  Although this is a serial narrative, many chapters can be read as if they were stand-alone episodes.  Psyren’s dark and conspiratorial tone and the sense of impeding doom that hangs over it is such a thrilling read, and creator Toshiaki Iwashiro offers many great scenes and sequences.  It’s enough to make you forget that you came to story in the middle.  This story is a potboiler that keeps calling you back to Psyren.

POSSIBLE AUDIENCE:  Readers who want science fiction thrillers will dial into danger for Psyren call.
