OK, this is not your old New Mutants! These kids aren't going out on missions, they don't have their own jump suits (uniforms) and they don't have code names (I do hope they will get these however but they will be more in the vein of nicknames). This is more a school, growing pains type of book.

I think the best way to describe the writing in this book, (This isn't meant in a derogatory way) is simple. It seems a lot more grass roots than say New X-Men. It has an earthy family vibe to it which could really work. The problem with this issue is the dialogue in some parts seems a little rushed, the conversation between Sofia and Julian at the beginning for instance. In other places though everything is fine, which makes the poor dialogue stand out even more. Also the whole hunt for the new kid seemed a bit unevenly paced an easy.

The art on this book is really weird. Sometimes it looks OK. Other times it looks out of proportion. The people look elongated (especially Dani's neck) and their clothes don't seem to fit them (checkout Xavier's jacket). Another thing is that everyone looks rigid. No one conveys the whole aspect of motion very well in the characters' movements. I look at Joshua Middleton's covers and think to myself, his pencils would have looked great for the interior art. Then I look at it like this. The whole vibe of this book is earthly and simple. Though there (which is just my opinion remembers) may be some faults with the art, Grants style really does work in helping create this feel. It matches the writing and I'm not sure other styles would have (I mean Hitches work is great, but it would have been all wrong here).

You may think I don't like this book, but you'd be mistaken. Yeah I've pointed out stuff that I don't think work this issue, but the first two I thought worked really well. I still think this is a nice series though, that is looking at Xavier's vision from another view point, which is nice. I'm definitely onboard for this first arc and hopefully longer.


Report Card – C (After a steady start, it's slightly slipped in places, but is still nice. Has potential and hopefully will reach it)
