The cover for Manifestations: The Art of Will Grant

There are certainly a small number of readers familiar with Will Grant.  He is the co-creator and artist of the horror graphic novel, Lost in the Wash.  It is a down and dirty supernatural tale that looks like the bastard child of Zap Comix! and Tales from the Crypt (but who’s the daddy?).  Grant is also the creator of The Scrounge comix.

Manifestations: The Art of Will Grant is essentially a short magazine/book hybrid (the “mook”) that offers a glimpse into the visuals and imagination of Will Grant.  It seems unfair to call him simply a horror comic book artist, so perhaps, “artist of the dark fantastic” fits best.  He is a purveyor of the unsettling the way H.R. Giger or Robert Williams are.  In fact, Grant’s style resembles a mélange of a who’s who of dark visionaries, including early Berni Wrightson and Sam Keith.  There are hints of S. Clay Wilson, Graham Ingels, and even Ed “Big Daddy” Roth.  I guess it’s okay to call Grant’s stunning visuals hot-rod horror.

For people who haven’t read his comic books, Manifestations: The Art of Will Grant can be an inexpensive “Whitman’s Sampler.”  I guarantee that this sampler will make you want more.  However, I see Manifestations as merely a down payment on that oversized, coffee table “Art of Will Grant” book that is sure to come sometime in the future when more of us will want to give him his due.
