This trade paperback combines two very different storylines from the JSA comic book. One story deals with the modern JSA journeying back to the 1950s to save their older counterparts from Degaton. The second storyline is a tie-in with the "Day of Vengeance" miniseries which has the JSA battling the Spectre even as the Spectre goes after Black Adam. These two tales don't really fit together but perhaps we should be grateful that DC didn't pad out both storylines to fit into two trade paperbacks. Each storyline does well on its own. They showcase Johns' skill in handling a huge cast, facing diverse threats. Everyone gets a chance to show his stuff and various plotlines for succeeding issues are carefully set up. The art is also quite good, making the story easy to follow despite the fast pace of the action and the swiftly-changing settings. A few of the figures look a little stiff but not to the point of hurting the overall look of the book. This paperback is a clear example of how good the JSA comic is, even without any super-star artist working on it.
