In this issue, Heaven’s Militia is preparing an onslaught on Senator Alcasan while Radeemer tries to recruit Nora’s old buddies to save her for the extremist militia. But who said Nora wanted to be saved. After all, she’s willingly helping the Militia plot their attack. We find out a little more about Joan and her connection to heaven. This makes her quest against the Senator more poignant than ever.

This is the first issue in a while that made me ache for the next issue. As usual, not much happens, as the big finale is in the next issue, yet, there are enough touches and small elements that make this issue worthwhile. Perhaps it’s because Howard is not trying to foreshadow plots points that most readers can see coming a mile away. Instead, he focuses on the issue at hand. I really wish he had done that more often.

As usual, the artwork is good. More than any issue before that, Howard attempts to give each character a unique face. The character’s proportions, his pacing and storytelling are also improving. It’s fun to see how Howard masters his craft better than when he started the first Dead@ 17 series in 2003. However, much of this issue features big panels that are usually a sure sign that there is some padding in his work.
