Dr. Yatz's formula has turned talk show host Jack Ryder into a schizophrenic superhero called the Creeper. But apparently Yatz's formula has had worse effects as some glob-like monster is prowling the woods, sucking the skin off people. The Creeper goes off to find Yatz and briefly encounters Batman and a mysterious serial killer called the Axeman but both appear in the story so briefly, they are mere interruptions in the wider tale of the Creeper looking into his origins. The art is suitably weird, making all the metahumans look bizarre, frightening and powerful, while still retaining a touch of humanity that makes them interesting, even sympathetic. The ordinary humans however don't fare so well. With all the moody shadows, it is hard to tell one adult male character from another so we can't really be sure who got killed and who survived. The story has some intriguing aspects but the writer fails to engage our feelings with too many of the characters. The terrified kids, the crazed criminal, the grieving father-- their dialogue and actions all seem too contrived for us to care about them. Even the gimmick of having Ryder and the Creeper converse with each other in the character's head, can get tiresome.
