Wolverine #62

X-Men leader Cyclops has charged Wolverine with the task of finding the evil and treacherous mutant known as Mystique. Wolverine travels the world looking for the shape changing woman and he desires nothing more than killing her. Will he?

The purpose of this story is to echo in the comic book, the tense relationship Mystique and Wolverine shared in the X-Men movies. The chase by Wolverine and the first tale of the mutants’ encounter foster that feeling. Yet, it feels fake as we all know that the real meeting of the two was in Uncanny X-Men #141 during the Days of the Future Past story. Mystique back then did not react in any particular way next to Logan (Wolverine) that must have been amnesiac back then.

This story just doesn’t make sense although it is entertaining. Flair is the one human sense that does not forget. That Wolverine could ever forget Mystique is odd. Having Cyclops sanction the murder of one of the X-Men’s mother is odder. Had they shown either Cyclops or Wolverine asking themselves about how fellow X-Man, Nightcrawler would feel about the murder of his mother, this story would have been more credible.

There’s a kinetic quality to Garney’s work that reminds me of Romita Jr. It’s the rough edges, like a Western movie and a desperate car chase that makes it so fulfilling.
