Continuing the series’ streak of insightful political commentary, issue #10 of The Flintstones delivers the goods. Examining political corruption, bad government, the reliance on drone warfare, and the vagaries of art, this installment covers a lot of ground. The Werner Herzog cameo is quite humorous in its own right. There’s also the sad loss of a beloved character that will no doubt take the reader by surprise. It’s an abrupt end and truly comes out of left field. Or I guess left cave, if we’re sticking with the Bedrock theme.

Mark Russell continues to establish a foothold for this unlikely series. The potential for innovative storylines is essentially limitless. The recent introduction of a Jetsons series will only create more fertile ground for inevitable crossovers. In the era of President Trump and American hyper-partisanship, this series has the potential to be a powerful voice, stepping beyond mere entertainment. We’ll see where Russell takes it next.

The artwork of Steve Pugh is clearly coming from a place of joy. The visual gags, variety of creatures – it’s truly an artist’s dream to land a gig like this. He’s a perfect fit for this book and I hope he sticks with it.
