The Vulture, it seems is recruiting new henchmen by attracting trouble teens to his cause. When a kid flies to his death in the middle of a park, Peter Parker and his ex-girlfriend Carlie must put their differences aside to solve the case. But are they too late to prevent other kids from falling into the claws of the Vulture?

The surprise reveal of the villain recruiting the kids at the end if the issue is not much of a surprise for readers familiar with Spider-man. Still, it’s interesting to see how he was upgraded, much like the Owl was in Daredevil a few years ago. I like the premise that the Spider-man island mess has attracted people who think they can get powers just by being in New York City. The story is not spectacular and the next issues will really tell if this new storyline is any good.

I used to love Camuncoli’s work when he worked on the Intimates several years ago. On Dark Wolverine, he was perfectly suited for the twisted and anti-social nature of the story. But in Spider-man, he is painful to watch. The grins and angst he draws his characters with doesn’t work with the adventurous world of Spider-man. It’s too gritty. And he doesn’t do emo kids so well. If he had a better inker, like Sandra Hope, his work would be better for this series.
