This issue tells many tales of Spongebob Squarepants. The first is about Spongebob trying to resolve the mystery of Mermaid Man’s disappearance. The second longer story is about Spongebob becoming the champion of a specie of fishes that lives beneath the soil of the sea that are affected by a destructive worm – don’t ask. The comic includes two short stories drawn in a different style by James Kochalka.

I love Spongebob Squarepants. It’s one of the best cartoon on television and the title song is quite appealing. The comic book captures most of the irreverent fun found in the animated series. It’s clearly meant to entertain. I’ll say it’s a perfect comic book for kids, if you’re the type of parent that wants everything sanitized yet feel that something over the top and somehow spicy is still needed for your kids.

However, I have to commend the “risk” taken with the Kochalka pieces. They are not groundbreaking, but the fact that Viacom was ok with the design of one of its properties not being respected totally is cool. The other stories follow the animated character bibles established for Spongebob more closely. I always like to see softraced coloured art, and of course, just like the cartoon series, the comic book features much of that. It’s a fun comic book. I pretty sure every issue is as safe and entertaining.
