Suicide Squad, The Justice League of China, and Emperor New-Superman/Doomsday wreak havoc in China while New Super-Man sacrifices himself to save the day.

As I alluded to in my last New Super-Man review, I was really afraid that an appearance of The Suicide Squad in New Super-Man spelt doom for the title. Instead it spelt Doomsday. A Suicide Squad guest appearance in a DC Comics book is like a Wolverine or X-Men guest appearance in a Marvel Comics book back in the 1980s and 1990s: a sign of desperation as far as sales is concerned. At least here their involvement is regulated to eye candy and writer Gene Luen Yang keeps the title's overall story arc on a continuously upward trajectory. All seems well...

...except that there is a a panel for panel recreation of the 20 plus year old Doomsday vs. Superman battle. What? I'm pretty confused. New Super-Man has been much better than this thus far.

Brent Peeples does an excellent job recreating the panels from Superman #75 (1993). I like his art better when he's creating his own inspired astral plane battles between I-Ching and his spectral foe.

Still worth reading, but weighted down by unnecessary tropes and guest appearances, New Super-Man remains a unique superhero read.

Rating: 7/10
