Packed with 67 pages of hilarious horror stories and articles for the Hip Hop cultured, Ghetto Manga Quarterly is your best weapon against the bland, over-priced titles swarming this Wednesday’s new issue rack.

Produced by Ghostwerks Publishing out of Dallas, Texas, GMQ embodies all the best things about street culture: It’s assured, it’s colorful, it’s diverse, and it doesn’t give a damn. Particularly, the “Undead Celebrities Gallery,” in which underground comic’s sharpest artists re-imagine pop culture’s dearly departed as ghosts and ghouls. Looking at the celebs being “honored” within this undead hall of fame (Bruce Lee, Biggie Smalls, etc.), you really begin to understand the real mission behind this publication: To give an artistic voice to underrepresented, urban comic creators and the things that inspire them.

Standing out amongst the crosswords, pin-up art, and top 5 lists is Zombie Dickheads by Chris Moreno (World War Hulk: Frontline). It’s an irreverent, 10-page story about a small band of self-preserving zeds who’d rather watch TV than climb up the food chain. However, if that isn’t bold enough for you, Howard Russell gets the “too soon” award with his undead Michael Jackson story. (Relax…the only questionable thing about it is that it’s way too short.)

Just recently released, GMQ can be downloaded for 99 cents until November 21st at GhettoManga.com (see below for the code). For those of you who prefer to have a physical copy, you can get the $7.00 print version with a 10% off coupon (below). Regardless of what your preference is, the informative and fulfilling Ghetto Manga Quarterly is a steal, putting all those costly, emaciated Big Two monthlies to shame.
