Daken, Wolverine’s son becomes the new protagonist in this comic book series starting this issue. The title’s name has been changed to Dark Wolverine, to highlight the fact that Daken, with the Dark Avengers is standing in as the team’s Wolverine to the rest of the world. In this issue, more about Daken’s worldviews and agenda is revealed. Daken wishes to take over the New Avengers and Norman Osborn and starts using his pheromone powers to manipulate the minds of his fellow Dark Avengers. Will he get his way? Will his dad save him from himself?

This was a good “first issue” and clearly explained the character of Daken to those that did not know him. There are many subplots introduced in this issue setting up many interesting future stories revolving around Daken. I was also surprised at the cliffhanger ending. Normally a comic book like this one that is clearly being telegraphed by Marvel Comics’ editorial board leaving little room for the writer to do anything compelling would be a stinker. Way, although he wasn’t very good in his last issue of Wolverine, did a much better job here and used the little room his editors gave him to make something worthwhile with this new character.

Camuncoli has been a better artist. When he drew the Intimates for Wildstorm he’s characters looked more compelling. The only difference is that he had a more competent inker – Sandra Hope that was capable of improving his work. Here,  Catacchio only enhance Camuncoli’s weaknesses like the wider than normal mouths and the goofy expressions of the character. The way this is drawn is not bad, but would be a better fit in a Vertigo series, than one featuring a Wolverine.
