Comic Con: Neil Gaiman Reteams with Vertigo for Sandman Mini

Neil Gaiman's masterwork, The Sandman, is a medium-defining and iconic paragon of comic book literature and art. By all accounts, it's a tough act to trump, but as the award-winning and best-selling author announced at today's San Diego Comic Con Vertigo panel, Neil himself (also the name of his Twitter handle, incidentally) will be attempting to do just that.

Neil stood before a stupefied audience at Vertigo's panel, promoting a new Sandman mini-series, launching in 2013 under the Vertigo imprint, that will delineate the manner in which Morpheus was imprisoned at the beginning of Neil's classic Sandman run.

The Sandman lasted seventy-five issues, its collections have sold millions worldwide, and it has spawned all sorts of spin-offs and mini-series, not least of which was Mike Carey's formidable Lucifer series. Neil Gaiman is also the author of such lauded works as American Gods, Coraline, Neverwhere, and Stardust.

I think now we all know what the talk of this year's Con is going to be.
