Archie is looking for a job to pay for his car’s repairs, now that he no longer dates Betty who was his mechanic. But Betty still has feelings for Archie. But these may be too late as Archie has set his sight on Veronica and for both, it appears to be love at first site. Has Betty lost Archie forever?

I really enjoyed this retelling of the classic Archie/Betty/Veronica love triangle. Mark Waid made sense of something that was never really explained, while continuing the reality television feel of the series. Here, Waid portrays classic Archie tropes, such as his goofiness and clumsiness. It’s all very funny and adds a lot to these classic characters. Waid opened up parenthesis with Jughead, explaining his past. It will get fully played out next issue. I can’t wait.

Fiona Staples is becoming the classic Archie artist for me, the same way Dan DeCarlo and Dan Parent were for their generation. Of all the alternate covers for this issue and the first, only Staples’s interpretation of Archie feels right to me. She adds a lot of comedy and slapstick humour to the pages, which again, are classic Archie tropes. While the art looks fresh and contemporary, it’s still an Archie story. My only complaint is that Staples’s inking is too rough and hard. She should soften her touch a bit.
