This new series by Gage is set in a universe where super heroes are like cops. They are mandated by the state to operate and assist normal police force in their work.  Veteran super hero John Dusk has been witnessing many criminals being released after committing serious crimes and he wants to change that. At first without any specific intent, he starts to stalk and murder potential criminals and convicted felons released by the “system.”  Is John Dusk becoming a serial killer himself?

The premise of this series is interesting and can only be described as Nexus meets the Punisher. So of course, a lot of similar material has been created in the past. Here there are adjustments such as the legal framework where super heroes operate. Apparently John Dusk cannot go out of state to capture a potential felon.  It’s also unclear who knows his identity. As an introductory issue, it was good. There is more to discover yet from this world and let’s hope that Gage can add more layers to this story, otherwise it won’t be any different than the various Punisher-wannabes out there.

Viacava’s work is solid, although not sexy and provocative. He delivers a straight story visually sticking closely to the story and not bringing innovation. I’m not complaining. For a story stepped in the real world, it’s important to have something easy for the reader to identify with. He succeeds on that front. But I can’t help wonder how this series would have looked if say the publisher had tried a crime noir feel.
