Lucky Number Slevin

Slevin visits his friend’s apartment after losing his job and his girlfriend. However, two rival crime bosses known as the Boss and the Rabbi mistake him for his friend. His friend owes each crime boss a lot of money and they want it back or else. Can Slevin pull out of this mess and save his hide before the assassin hired by the crime bosses kill him?

The story starts out well with the mistaken identity plot and the girl next door plot. However, the story soon gets caught up its own story within a story and plot elements and dialogues introduced earlier no longer make sense after. The other problem with this story is that half the movie is spent explaining the story within the story, instead of showing us why we should care. Once the major plot spoilers are up the movie is not as fun.

This is an action thriller flick that looks like an art film. There are several long shots and great care has been taken with the decor. For example, all rooms in this film have great wallpaper. There is a genuine sense of design for this film that one can see even in the opening credits. The long shots, like the one at the terminal tell the story really well and are always part of the “two step forward” aspect of the plot, where what one sees is not really what’s going on. In the film they call it a Kansas City shuffle.
