A group of American soldiers in World War II is tasked with preventing a team of renegade angels from igniting a new war in heaven in this miniseries. In the penultimate chapter, the soldiers reach a hidden monastary where they prepare for the final confrontation with the fallen host. There isn't too much action in this issue, aside from a head-banging opening sequence but the creators make up for this by setting a mood of wonder and menace that sharpens the readers' anticipation for the actual battle in the next issue. There is a Dante-esque frozen lake and a holy-yet-disturbing hall of relics. It is all very understated without mystical explosions or scenes of terrifying demons. The individual soldiers are each fleshed out without any one soldier stealing the show. This has been a stirring story of a secret war being fought by small units, hidden inside the larger conflict of World War II. Hopefully, the last issue will finally achieve the epic scope that such a confrontation deserves.
