Rated “T” for “Teen”

After her father leaves town to avoid his gambling debts, high school student Nanami Momozono is kicked out of their apartment.  Then, Nanami saves a strange man named Mikage, so he generously offers her his home.  Nanami later discovers that Mikage had tricked her into taking his job as the tochigami (local god) of the Mikage Shrine.  To make matters worse, her shinshi (or familiar) is Tomoe, a fox yokai who keeps Nanami from enjoying her youth.

As Kamisama Kiss, Vol. 15 (Chapters 85 to 89) opens, Nanami continues her trip back in time.  Why has she gone time-traveling?  Tomoe, whom Nanami loves, developed strange marks across his body and then, went into a coma.  Mikage informs Nanami that the marks are part of a curse cast by a fallen kami.

Now, in the past, Nanami has found a young Tomoe.  To save him from suspicious villagers, she takes up residence with Yukiji, a woman who is somehow connected to Tomoe.  Yukiji hates yokai, which Tomoe is.  Nanami searches for Kuromaro, a fallen kami that lives on Mount Ontake and who is said to have the kind of power that can help Tomoe.  Her search for Kuromaro is hampered by the arrival of Akura-oh, a great yokai know for his bad actions.

[This volume contains two bonus stories, “Special Episode 1” and “Special Episode 2.”]

THE LOWDOWN:  I always give the Kamisama Kiss manga credit for being imaginative.  Almost every story arc offers some strange new place or weird and wonderful new creature, being, or person to dazzle readers.

However, I am not as excited about the time travel story, so Kamisama Kiss Volume 15 isn’t one of my favorite volumes.  Other than Yukiji and her servant, Futa, I don’t like the characters that Nanami meets in the past.  This volume is by no means low quality storytelling.  This is just a personal quirk.  I am ready for Kamisama Kiss creator Julietta Suzuki to move on to the next story arc.

POSSIBLE AUDIENCE:  Fans of fantasy and yokai-themed manga will like the Shojo Beat title, Kamisama Kiss.

Rating: B /10
