DC makes a return to Westerns by bringing back Jonah Hex, the scarred bounty hunter that had a lengthy run starting in the 1970s. The first story has Jonah tasked to recover the son of a millionaire who has been kidnapped. But his trail leads a carnival which pits young boys against vicious dogs for sport. It is a sad, sordid, self-contained story that serves to introduce the reader to the brutality of Hex's world. While the story is interesting and even moving, it is also somewhat lacking in dramatic tension. The bad guys aren't that formidable and are no match for a hardened killer like Hex. The art however is very impressive, almost looking like it was painted. This new title looks promising but Hex should have opponents that intimidate even him. An unending series of quick and bloody victories is going to get dull pretty soon.
