Justice League Elite #5

The Elite again go undercover, posing as a band of supervillains to infiltrate some alien drug-ring. This is the second time the team has resorted to posing as supervillains (third time if you count the JLA issue) and it is getting a bit old. There are frequent references to characters sleeping with each other and how much they have all suffered. But we don't really see it. It is almost as if Kelly feels he has to establish the legitimacy of his team by talking about sex and violence to show how hard-core they are. Despite some great art including some clever character designs, the characters just fail to grab us. Some, like Kasumi, are just wordless figures in the background while others, like Major Disaster, are used mainly as a mouthpiece for some rather overloaded wisecracks. Fortunately the JSA show up as a cliffhanger on the last page, to confront the Elite. Maybe now, after all this chattering, we can finally see some action.
