CARTOONIST: Jeffrey Brown & James Kochalka
48 pp., B&W, $4.95
The second issue of James Kochalka’s interview comic, CONVERSATIONS, has arrived to bring us great joy. Basically, Conversations allows Kochalka and another cartoonist to discuss cartooning and other issues, but the conversation is drawn as a comic book story.
In Conversations #2, Kochalka takes on hot indy-comics star, Jeffrey Brown. The two draw pages together in which Brown’s cartoon version of himself takes on Kochalka’s cartoon self, a sardonic and jokey elf. They discuss cartooning and art, but the best moments are when they argue about why they create. It’s a comic battle in which real cartoonists use fight comics to share their ideas with each other and with readers.
Imagine a message board back-and-forth between two comic creator heavy weights; then, see it as an actual comic book. It’s even better than it sounds, and another imaginative production from the mind of Kochalka.
