Stalking across the depths of the ocean, dispatching everything from sharks to giant squids, comes the Hulk. As a long-buried episode from Bruce Banner's youth begins to surface with possible ramifications for the future, the Hulk finds himself washed up on a strange island, populated by several hapless victims... and some most unexpected monsters.
This is the first ever issue of Hulk I’ve read and I’m only reading it as a deal with a friend to pick up Black Panther. Let me say though, I was impressed. The way we were introduced, was meant to highlight how ferocious and unstoppable Hulk is. And it was done well. Especially as it was intertwined with a revelation that I wasn’t sure existed, other than in the film. Hulk has flashbacks to when Bruce was in school, which highlight the fact that the dual rage has always been there. I thought that was nicely done and what can I say bout the end. I’m definitely confused at how it’s possible, but intrigued to see what happens next.
It’s another first here, as I haven’t seen Lee Weeks pencils before. Again though, I’m impressed. The way he captures the opening sequence encapsulates the writing. The Hulk is grim, intimidating and relentless. We see this perfectly in his approach to his underwater struggle. Studio F does a real good job with the colours too, as the subdued look really works for the tone.
