Hawkman #49 Writer: Justin Gray, Jimmy Palmiotti Penciller: Chris Batista Inker: Cam Smith
This is a quiet issue before the big storm leading to the climax of the Infinite Crisis crossover. Stationed on Rann, Hawkman and Hawkgirl, their allies the Green Lantern Corps, Adam Strange and some Golden Eagle, continue to fight against Black Fire’s alliance of power against Rann. The Hawks also take some time off to rediscover each other and why they are in love. They know the universe is coming to an end, and although Black Fire blames Rann and its allies, they fight the good fight until the end.
Making sense of the continuity of this story is difficult. It’s not because of the series itself, but the amount of DC Comics’s material related to the Infinite Crisis going on all at once. In effect, the story is just another fight before the relaunch of the series as Hawkgirl. There is no point to this issue. Many of DC Comic’s books this month had similar problems. They are but fillers until the One year Later event.
The artwork is good and crisp. It’s a quiet issue with a focus on romance for Hawkgirl and Hawkman, but also another war story. Batista captures all these scenes well, whether the Hawks are fighting in space or sharing a bed.
