The tough city of Ergastulum is filled with mafia types, petty thieves, and everything in between. The law of violence takes precedence over the rule of law. Gangsta focuses on the "Handymen," 34-year-old Nicolas “Nic” Brown and 35-year-old Worick Arcangelo. They are the guys who take care of the jobs no one else will handle – from mundane deliveries to extrajudicial killings.
As Gangsta, Vol. 5 (Chapters 23 to 28) opens, the Hunters and the Destroyers (a group of Hunters) continue their rampage through the Twilight community. Dr. Theo, the only physician who helps Twilights, takes care of those wounded by the Hunters, Erica and Mikhail. Meanwhile, new Destroyers make their presence known, and Worick battles the vicious Striker.
THE LOWDOWN: After digging into the past, the Gangsta manga returns to the very bloody present. Gangsta Volume 5 does what the series does best – brutal, mortal combat. The “heroes” are on the run, and this volume portends something big just over the horizon of this narrative. Vol. 5 is not the best jump-on point for new readers, but it is reason enough to start at Vol. 1 and work your way up to it.
POSSIBLE AUDIENCE: Readers looking for some violent VIZ Signature action will want to get Gangsta.
