Fragmenta: First Issues book review

Fragmenta: First Issues is the fifth book in Candle Light Press’ “Fragmenta” series.  The other books include Fragmenta: The Art of the Writer; Fragmenta: Cross Nurses and Agile Clothing; Fragmenta: On the Record; and Fragmenta: Megacontemplations.

I have described writer John Ira Thomas as “prolific” numerous times.  Apparently, even with three frequent artist collaborators (Carter Allen, Will Grant, and Jeremy Smith), Thomas produces scripts faster than they can be drawn.  Fragmenta: First Issues is a collection of scripts for “first issues” that are waiting for their turn to be drawn.

Fragmenta: First Issues collects the following first issue scripts:

MAN IS VOX: The Other Way #1

THE LOWDOWN:  Of all the Fragmenta books, Fragmenta: First Issues is by far the best and most useful.  I say useful because John Ira Thomas not only goes into detail about his creative process, but he also talks extensively about his thinking.  It is as if he opened a window into his imagination as a comic book writer.  Plus, Chapter 7 offers a delightful anecdote about his almost-encounter with newspaper reporter and author turned crime television genius, David Simon (NBC’s Homicide: Life on the Street and HBO’s The Wire).

I would normally say that novice and wannabe comic book writers should consider this book a must-have.  However, I want to suggest that veteran comic book creators, including some of those “superstar” talents, also take a look at this wonderful book about comic book scripts and comic book script creating.

POSSIBLE AUDIENCE:  Comic book readers, editors, and creators will want to at least sample Fragmenta: First Issues.
