In the penultimate chapter of the Defenders’ revival series, Doctor Strange and Namor face off against hellish versions of Marvel heroes recreated in Dordammu’s image. In the final showdown against the evil Marvel universe, Doctor Strange goes head to head against the evil version of himself, while Namor helps himself.

It’s evident that Giffen and Dematteis are following a formula, but at least, it works! There are constant laughs and in jokes from all characters. This is the best introduction one can get about the Defenders and I’m glad I picked up this series. I only wish Marvel and DC would remember why series like this one sell so much before they head for their next universe shaking crossover event.

Maguire handles the art very well as usual and provides interesting evil doppelgangers of the heroes. I like how he draws Daredevil’s eyes. It’s gothic and gross at the same time. His Beast looks like G’nort, from the Justice League series, but it’s okay. The evil Doctor Strange resembles Doctor Druid more than Strange himself. Considering that character’s history in the Avengers, it’s a fitting form.
