Daredevil Father #1

Joe Quesada's long-awaited return to Daredevil (as an artist) is the mini-series, DAREDEVIL: FATHER, in which the Marvel Editor-in-Chief acts as both writer and penciller. The first issue hints that Daredevil will confront memories of his father; that his alter ego, attorney Matt Murdoch, will take on a controversial court case; that a non-white criminal will play an influential role in the series, and that there will be a serial killer.

As for the art, it's not Quesada's best, and he is an underrated cartoonist, if for no other reason than that he doesn't draw much (at least much sequential art) since he became E.I.C. There isn't a lot of imagination in the layout, as half the story is comprised of unimaginatively designed splash pages. The multi-panel pages are nicely thought out, but just not as well drawn or cared for as the splashes. Clearly, Quesada was more interested in the splash pages than the non-splash pages. The art in the latter isn't helped by Danny Miki, a highly overrated inker born in womb of Rob Liefeld's Image Boom Age studio.

As for the story, it might be interesting if it didn't read like the high school creative writing class version of Frank Miller and "Law & Order." Besides, this is clearly meant to be a graphic novel, and it may read better as such. And the first issue doesn't indicate that this will really work as serialized fiction; it reads like an excerpt, not a chapter. Thus, not only is the content mediocre, but also the publishing format is a rip off.
