Set in the early part of Batman's career, this tale introduces both Bruce Wayne's first love, Julie Madison and mad scientist Dr. Hugo Strange, to new readers. It is a very stylish-looking story, harkening back to the 1940s comics but with modern sensibilities. Batman is suitably intimidating and scarey but is still human enough to-- gasp-- get really 'close' to Julie. Wagner also does a great job of building up the menace of both the ganglords who secretly rule Gotham and Hugo Strange with his mysterious experiments. Like the recent NEW FRONTIER miniseries, this tale pays homage to the past while setting new standards for the future. Hopefully, the rest of the miniseries will be of this quality.
