This issue concentrates on Black Manta and his attempt to gain powers similar to the other Sub Diego residents through the obscure company that developed a serum to enable humans to breathe underwater, through Aquaman’s DNA. The rest of the story is a tie -in to other events from Infinity Crisis and the next Aquaman series written by Kurt Busiek.

This story serves as an epilogue to the Sub Diego storyline that Aquaman has been through since 2004. One move is to bring the chaotic world of Atlantis back closer to the Aquaman and pull all pieces from the current volume of this series to serve as the launch pad of the latest incarnation. Although there’s an effective introduction to Mera, Aquaman’s wife in the few pages, this story is another filler.

Kirk continues to provide layouts for Clarke, but one can feel how much the artists have to pad their work to fill up the padded script handed to them.
